Georgia Gwinnett College to Open New Learning Center

Georgia Gwinnett College will celebrate the completion of its new, state-of-the-art Library and Learning Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, reception and tours. More than 200 are expected to attend.  The $28.3 million, 91,000 square-foot building will serve as the intellectual center of the college. Not only will the Library and Learning Center serve students and faculty, but it also will welcome the community-at-large as a resource hub, educational facility and common gathering space to enhance student engagement.

The building's curved wall of windows and square arches make a strong architectural statement. Featuring a large, three-story atrium with views of the campus' central quad and signature building, the Library and Learning Center is designed to house 300,000 volumes and a fusion of digital and print library holdings. It contains technologically advanced classrooms, a presentation practice room, a variety of gathering spaces for study groups, a seminar room, a quiet reading room and a coffee shop. The college's Center for Teaching Excellence and Student Success programs also will occupy the building. The facility will host meetings, readings, lectures and other events.

The building is one of three major construction projects that will be complete for fall semester 2010. GGC will welcome its first student residents to the campus' new residence halls shortly before classes begin Aug. 23. The Library and Learning Center will be open by then, as will dining facilities in the new Student Center, which will be fully operational later this fall.
