Smog Alert -- Code Orange for 8.12.10 -- Ozone

Georgia logged another ozone exceedance yesterday, which makes this lucky number thirteen. We've also witnessed five consecutive Smog Alerts, one issued for tomorrow, within the past week.

People may not realize the real difference in something as simple as changing their commute mode, but with half of all smog-forming emissions coming from the tailpipes of cars, The Clean Air Campaign wants drivers to know that a single person can affect change in Georgia's air quality. Not driving alone to work for one day per week can avoid one ton of pollutants from being emitted into the air in a year.

Sunlight and warm temperatures drive nitrogen oxides to react to form ozone. And with this summer being considered "mild compared to what's in store" by National Weather Foundation climate scientist Amanda Staudt, commuters are encouraged to do their part to improve the air. Furthermore, those that practice alternative commuting will be rewarded. The Commuter Rewards incentive program will pay clean commuters up to $100 cash, while carpoolers can earn $40 - $60 gas cards each month. And, The Clean Air Campaign can't forget about those taking transit, teleworking, cycling or walking who can win $25 gift cards every month.
