Phoenix, Arizona: Based on 2007 criminal conviction statistics:
Illegal immigrants account for 34% of the drug convictions; 44% of forgery; 96% of smuggling; 85% of false ID; 50% of crimes related to “chop shops”; 36% of kidnappings; 21% of crimes committed with weapons; 13% of aggravated assaults; 13% of robberies; 13% of stolen cars; 10% of sex crimes; 11% of murders and 20% of the felony DUI convictions in the Phoenix area. Illegal immigrants make up 19 percent of those convicted of crimes in Maricopa County and 21 percent of those in county jails.
Illegal immigrants only make up an estimated 9 percent of the county’s population.
It is estimated that each violent crime cost citizens $20,000, and each property crime cost citizens $4363 per offense.
All the more a concern is research that finds the likelihood of an illegal immigrant being incarcerated grows with longer residence in the United States and that the U.S. born children (considered citizens) of illegal immigrants are dramatically more likely to be involved in crime than their illegal immigrant parents. For instance, native born Hispanic male high school dropouts are eleven times more likely to be incarcerated than their foreign born counterparts.
It's the "illegal" that we're wary of. Those who are unwilling to get and be here legally. No accountability. No traceability.

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/05 22:30I married an immigrant, and she did it legally. I think it cost $600 at the time and she had to wait about 3 months and go thru several interviews. Her brother was here on a work visa and had a child, he could come back using the anchor baby game. He has been on the legal waiting list 11 or 12 years and should be getting legal access in about 18 months. No need to screw up over a decade of waiting.
On the other hand, illegals don't wait, don't pay to be processed legally and are not legal to even breath here.

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/06 12:36I think perhaps you should read the title of your own post more careful. The study links illegal immigration and crime. You seem to have confused that with causation. They are quite different.
If a study shows that cancer patients on average take more pain killers than cancer free people, should we assume that pain killers cause cancer? Of course not.
You are making the same invalid assumption here. Perhaps if illegal immigrants had a way to acquire legal standing they would not need to resort to crime. In my opinion, providing a path to citizenship for ailens (involving employment and a fine) would dramatically reduce crime.

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/06 13:15There is a path to citizenship, but it is not being used by the illegals. That is where the problem is.. Please take the time to read the immigration law before saying there is no path.
Obey the laws to get in and you are welcomed. Otherwise, you are illegal and violating our laws. No if, ands or buts.

The "link" between illegal aliens and crime is that they "cause" a higher percentage of crimes because they commit them! There is no greater "link" between illegal aliens and crime but that they commit a higher number, in relation to their portion of the total population. There is no confusion here, except on your part.
If a study shows that cancer patients on average take more pain killers than cancer free people, should we assume that pain killers cause cancer? Of course not. An absolutely ludicrous and erroneous analogy. Your argument is that committing crime causes someone to become an illegal alien?
You are making the same invalid assumption here. Perhaps if illegal immigrants had a way to acquire legal standing they would not need to resort to crime. First, there IS a way to acquire legal standing. It is absolutely unnecessary for someone to come here illegally because there IS a legal path.
Are you arguing that their illegal status CAUSES them to commit crime? Sounds like you're validating the findings of the report!
Are you arguing that illegal aliens are of such low moral standards that they cannot help but commit a crime?
I suppose that you are arguing that, if they could be "legal" then they wouldn't have to resort to less-than-honorable methods to exist. Of course, if I can find one illegal alien who has NOT committed a crime in this country, then your argument falls flat, doesn't it?
In my opinion, providing a path to citizenship for ailens (involving employment and a fine) would dramatically reduce crime. It would certainly decrease crime by illegal aliens, wouldn't it? Hey, let's legalize murder; we could cut the murder rate by 100% !

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/06 13:41David Brown wrote: Zeezil, your attempt to make me afraid of immigrants is not working. I am not fooled that easily with faulty information. "Poof! David you are a conservative."
Okay, I couldn't transform you with mere words, much like your unilateral declaration that the crime info is "faulty" doesn't make it so. Perhaps you will elaborate.
The statistics are apparently based on actual arrests and convictions of real people in an area (Phoenix) where a large statistical sample can be taken. I guess you can argue, David, that the stats are completely fabricated; or that these hapless aliens were wrongly convicted by "the man;" or that there is some "right wing conspiracy" to round up illegal aliens one shoplifter at a time.
So, David, can you just not bring yourself to admit that illegal aliens commit (for whatever reason) a higher percentage of crimes than legal residents, in relation to their percentage of the total population? The evidence is compelling; are you THAT intellectually dishonest?
No one will make you vote for McCain if you admit this, David. Heck, I think that he agrees more with you than he does with me!

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/06 15:41I would suggest going to the Gwinnett Docket and look at the names and pictures and see who is getting booked more. I belive oyu will see really quick how these stats hold up in Gwinnett and thoughtout the country.
Before I get the not guilty until proven innocent thing, I said look at who gets booked.

I apologize. I was not specific enough. There is no path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the United States. Immigration and Nationality Act section 212(a)(9)((i)(II) (commonly known as the 3/10 bar) prevents it.
Regardless of whether you think illegal immigrants should be here/stay here/be deported/etc, try looking at it from a cost-benefit perspective:
An illegal immigrant can a) sit around, follow the law, and eventually be arrested and deported; or b)commit crimes, make money, and eventually be arrested and deported.
Under the current system, an illegal immigrant has no incentive to follow the law. If a path to citizenship (and a legal, better paying job) existed and required law-abiding behavior, the incentive to commit crimes is gone, or at least lessened.
Also, illegal immigrants who are witnesses to or victims of crime are currently penalized when they come forward. [There are temporary visas for testifying witnesses (S and U visas) but they are not widely known or used.] A path to citizenship would encourage these illegal witnesses to aid law enforcement in arresting and punishing illegal immigrants who have committed other, violent crimes. This is an effective way to decrease crime without the nearly inconceivable difficulty and expense of locating, arresting, and deporting the roughly twelve million illegal immigrants currently in the United States.

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/06 16:56Glierta- I argue on you two points of "a" or"b " theory. If you are an illegal here in the US you ARE committing a crime just by being here!

Re:New Study Links Illegal Immigration and Crime - 2008/10/06 17:06The legal path to citizenship is handle from abroad, not within. They are breaking the law by being here. I would rather none of them had a job, then they would return home. We have too many law abiding Americans out of work to provide work for people that broke the law to get here.
I have no sympathy for someone that comes here illegally and can't find a job. I know enough people that are law abiding that can't find a good job.
